Fernando Santos named a squad of 24 today for Portugal’s upcoming games against Armenia and Argentina, giving calls to a number of either new or returning players to the team. The most notable of these was Bosingwa, who was famously exiled under Paulo Bento beginning in 2011. Initially an automatic starter under Carlos Queiroz, Bosingwa’s decline under Bento was swift. Now 32, Bosingwa is still a starter at Trabzonspor in the Turkish league, which is enough for Fernando Santos.
U-21 left-back Raphael Guerreiro also earns a call after an impressive season-and-a-half at Ligue 1 side Lorient. Also earning his first call is fellow left-back Tiago Gomes, who has had a solid start to the season at Braga, after a move from Estoril in the summer. While both Guerreiro and Gomes arguably deserve a call, if regulars Antunes and Fabio Coentrao were both fit, one feels that they would have been included in favor of Guerreiro and Gomes. This squad also sees the return of Helder Postiga, who missed out last time due to injury/poor form.
