Portugal U-20 head coach Hélio Sousa announced today Portugal’s 21-man squad for the U-20 World Cup, which begins later this month. The team is largely comprised of players who featured for the Portugal U-19 at last summer’s U-19 European Championship.
Arguably the two biggest names in the team are Lille’s Rony Lopes and Benfica’s Gonçalo Guedes. Rony Lopes was predicted to be included in the Portugal U-21 team later in the summer for their U-21 European Championship, but he will feature this summer for the U-20s, most likely for continuity. Lopes has played with some combination of these players for most of his Portugal youth career. Gonçalo Guedes is one of Portugal’s finest prospects at the moment. Only 18 years old, Guedes appeared 31 times for Benfica’s B team this season, where he scored eight times. On top of that, Guedes made five substitute appearances for Benfica’s first team this season. Much is expected of both Lopes and Guedes, but the truth of the matter is that Portugal has a very talented squad that has the potential to progress far in this summer’s tournament.
Here’s the full list:
