According to reports coming out of Portugal for some time, Paços Ferreira midfielder Sérgio Oliveira is set to return to Porto, after a two-season stay in Paços. With the Liga NOS season winding down (or winding up depending on your viewpoint), transfer rumors abound. Porto is at the heart of a lot of the transfer speculation, and the latest speculation is centered around Sergio Oliveira.
Oliveira played his youth years at Porto, before leaving for Paços Ferreira at the beginning of last season in a pseudo-loan deal, which saw Paços purchase 50% of his rights, but Porto still hold the ability to recall him. The move to Paços Ferreira did nothing short of wonders for his development. Initially an attacking-minded midfielder during his formative years at Porto, Oliveira developed a more defensive-minded and all-round midfield style at Paços Ferreira. During his two seasons at Paços, Oliveira amassed over 50 league appearances, cementing his spot as one of the team’s most important players.
Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed, all signs point toward Oliveira returning to his boyhood club next season. With midfielders like Casemiro and Oliver Torres set to leave upon the expiration of their loans, spots in midfield will open up. Despite this, Oliveira faces strong competition for a starting place in the team. But if he continues to blossom, as he has over the past two seasons, he may find himself in the team very quickly.
