In a sensational move, Bayern Munich today announced their capture Benfica’s 18 year old standout Renato Sanches, despite well documented interest abroad. Manchester United and Manchester City have made their interest in Sanches clear over the past months, but Bayern have swooped in to secure his signature for an up-front fee of €35 million, with the possibility of add-ons raising the fee further. A move for Sanches seemed on the cards, but few expected that one would be finalized before summer arrived.
This move is yet another piece in the impressive story of Sanches’s rise. At the beginning of the season, Sanches was little more than a well-regarded prospect within Benfica’s setup. After making his first-team debut at the end of October 2015, Sanches nailed down a starting spot in Benfica’s midfield for virtually the rest of the season, despite only being 18 years old. After making his debut for the Seleção in March, many are clamoring for his inclusion in Portugal’s squad at this summer’s European Championships.
