Statements by Rui Costa, president of Benfica, at Thinking Football, a League event taking place in Porto until Saturday
At Thinking Football, a League event taking place in Porto until Saturday, Rui Costa, president of Benfica, addressed this Thursday, via video call, the departure of Gonçalo Ramos to PSG.
“I managed the departure of Gonçalo (Ramos) with displeasure, because we live in a country like this, where clubs cannot survive without sales. What we sought with this sale was to protect the rest of the group. fact that I don’t consider Benfica the greatest in the world, but because in Portugal we don’t have the conditions to pay the same wages”, he began by saying, then explaining:
“The difference that Gonçalo would have at Benfica in our salary cap and what he could have at PSG is abysmal. For our part, we try to look at it from a sporting and financial point of view. From a financial point of view, there is no club that survives without sales. Gonçalo’s departure allowed Benfica to keep many more players.
