This Monday (11), Rogério Ceni was presented as Bahia’s new coach. During the press conference, the former goalkeeper drew laughter from those present in the press room. The reason? The coach joked with Jailson Baraúna when recalling the journalist’s discussion with Renato Paiva, former commander of Tricolor de Aço.
“Why did you laugh? You’re not going to fight me, are you? Not yet, right? I haven’t lost any yet, see?” said Ceni jokingly, after Jailson started asking the coach a question.

Understand the reason for the laughter?
On August 20, journalist Jaílson Baraúna discussed with Bahia’s then coach, Renato Paiva, after Tricolor’s victory against Red Bull Bragantino, in the Brazilian Championship. The Portuguese coach would not have liked criticism made by Baraúna, and the two ended up arguing.
The journalist opened the press conference by asking about the game and the regularity shown by the team on the field. Despite the mild tone of the question, Paiva responded by recalling criticism suffered by the same professional a few weeks ago.
“I thought I was going to stand up and point the finger. I thought I was going to do that. You like to insult me. He called me a coward and rude. I didn’t insult anyone, I didn’t lack respect. Coward? If I were a coward I would have already left. I didn’t say it to his face. You talk in your little show, when you’re alone”, said Renato Paiva.
The tense atmosphere between the two began after Bahia’s victory over América-MG. Jailson gave a long speech on a Band program criticizing the Portuguese coach’s attitudes.
“With your lack of education and cowardice. Because you are a coward. What I have to say, I told you personally. You take advantage of the press conference to talk about something else. Save it for the next press conference. You can’t make your team play two games in a row in the same way”, said the journalist at the time.
When will Rogério Ceni debut for Bahia?
Officially announced and presented by Bahia, Rogério Ceni is now looking forward to his debut at the head of Tricolor de Aço. The new coach, who signed a contract until December 2025, should debut this Thursday (14), when the northeastern team faces Coritiba, starting at 8pm (Brasília time), at Couto Pereira, in the 23rd round of the Brazilian Championship. The former goalkeeper’s mission is to move the team away from the relegation zone and ensure the club’s stay in Serie A.
With 22 points won, Bahia occupies 16th place in the Brasileirão, first place above the relegation zone. Santos, the first team in the relegation region, has 21.
