Corinthians: fans ‘ask for Luxembourg’s head’ after defeat in Fortaleza

Corinthians returned to the field on Thursday night (14). At Arena Castelão, Timão was defeated 2-1 by Fortaleza and lost the opportunity to climb the Brazilian Championship table. As usual since taking over at Alvinegro, coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo was singled out by the fans as the main culprit for yet another irregular performance by the team. In addition to the coach, midfielder Ruan Oliveira and left-back Matheus Bidu also did not escape criticism from Fiel.

In the opinion of a large part of the fans, Luxemburgo made a mistake in the lineup and in the changes throughout the game. Ruan Oliveira, in turn, missed badly on Fortaleza’s first goal and compromised Corinthians in the initial stage. In a pressure move from Leão do Pici, the 23-year-old was disarmed by Marinho in the defense field. The tricolor number 12 invaded the black and white area and rolled to Lucero, who bulged Cássio’s net.

After Lucero’s goal, Corinthians tied the game in the Fortaleza area. Free from marking, Pedro tested and left everything the same. In the second half, however, the home team scored the second goal with Yago Pikachu in stoppage time.

What is Corinthians’ position in the Brasileirão?

With the defeat at Castelão, Corinthians stagnated at 26 points and now occupies 14th place in the Brazilian Championship. The first team in the relegation zone, Santos has 21. Athletico-PR, the club that opens the G6, has 37.

Without major ambitions in the Brasileirão, Timão’s main objective in the competition is to remain in Série A. In 22 rounds played, Alvinegro recorded six wins, eight draws and eight defeats. There are 23 goals scored and 25 conceded.

When will Corinthians play the South American semi-final?

Corinthians’ last hope for a title of the season, the Copa Sudamericana began to be treated with seriousness and increased attention by Timão as the team advanced through the phases. Guaranteed in the semifinals of the continental tournament, Alvinegro will face Fortaleza itself.

The first leg is scheduled for 9:30 pm (Brasília time) on September 26th (Tuesday), at Neo Química Arena. The return will take place on October 3rd (Tuesday), at the same time, at Arena Castelão.
