Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen delivered a stunning performance in the Hungarian Grand Prix, securing his fifth win of the season and extending his lead in the drivers’ championship. Verstappen also gave Red Bull its fourth consecutive win, a feat that has not been achieved by the team since 2013.
Verstappen started from pole position and controlled the race from start to finish, despite a late challenge from Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who finished second. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez completed the podium, ensuring a double points haul for Red Bull.
The victory was especially sweet for Verstappen, who had suffered a heavy crash in the previous race at Silverstone after a collision with Hamilton. The incident had sparked a controversy between the two title rivals, but Verstappen showed his resilience and maturity by bouncing back with a flawless drive in Hungary.
« I’m very happy with this win. It was a very important race for me after what happened in Silverstone. I wanted to show that I’m not giving up and that I’m still fighting for the championship. The team did an amazing job with the car and strategy, and I’m very proud of them, » Verstappen said.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner praised Verstappen’s performance and hailed the team’s record-breaking achievement.
« Max was absolutely dominant today. He drove a perfect race and showed his class and character. He has been incredible this season and he deserves to be leading the championship. It’s also fantastic for the team to have four wins in a row, something we haven’t done since our glory days with Sebastian Vettel. We have a great momentum and we are looking forward to the second half of the season, » Horner said.
Red Bull now leads Mercedes by 12 points in the constructors’ championship, while Verstappen has an eight-point advantage over Hamilton in the drivers’ standings. The Formula One season will resume after a summer break with the Belgian Grand Prix on August 29.
