Botafogo may have one more novelty for the classic against Flamengo, this Saturday (2), at 9 pm (Brasília time), for the Brazilian Championship. The club managed to regularize the situation of defender Bastos, whose name was published in the CBF BID. Thus, he can be related to the duel valid for the 22nd round of the competition and make his debut for Botafogo.

Announced last Tuesday, Bastos has been in Rio de Janeiro since last Sunday. The Angolan defender agreed a contract valid until the end of 2024 with Botafogo and was the club’s last reinforcement for the current season. In the middle of 2023, there were five players signed. In addition to Bastos, forwards Diego Hernández, Valentín Adamo and Diego Costa, and right-back Mateo Ponte also arrived.

The defender had already been signed with Botafogo for about a month. However, for bureaucratic reasons, he needed an immigration visa to be able to travel to Brazil. Thus, he took a while to be able to travel to Rio de Janeiro.

In Botafogo, Bastos will bolster the squad. Adryelson and Cuesta are absolute starters on Bruno Lage’s team. In addition to them, the club also has Philipe Sampaio and Sousa as options for the defense. Even though he prefers his right leg, he also plays on the left side and has even played as a left-back.

Who is Bastos, Botafogo’s new defender

Revealed by Petro Luanda, from Angola, Bastos transferred to Rostov, from Russia, in 2013, aged 22. He stood out for the Russian club and was bought by Lazio, from Italy, in 2016. The Rome club paid around 6.5 million euros for the player (about R$ 33.3 million in corrected values).

After Lazio, Bastos passed by Al-Ain, from Saudi Arabia, and again by Rostov, from Russia, before going to Al-Ahli, his last club. He also played in two African Cups of Nations with Angola, in 2013 and 2019.
