Flamengo is the Brazilian under-20 champion of 2023. Rubro-Negro beat Palmeiras on penalties, 3-2, after a goalless draw in normal time, and won the second championship of the competition – the second over Alviverde. The game was marked by a stoppage invalidated by the arbitration and confusion at the end.
For Flamengo, Diego, Rayan and Petterson scored, but Lorran lost. Goalkeeper Dyogo was the hero when he defended Allan’s kick with his feet. In the end, David, from Palmeiras, isolated and gave the title to Rubro-Negro. Ian still had his penalty invalidated by a little stop.
“It’s very special here. The atmosphere is really good. We always have the strong support of the fans. Today, it had to be that way. The game was very difficult, everyone had the opportunity but they couldn’t kill the game. We managed to convert our charges, Lorran gave us a scare there, but we managed to be cooler – declared Mario Jorge, Flamengo coach, on the way out of the field.

Flamengo and Palmeiras goalkeepers stand out
The score at 0-0 was not for nothing. In front of the majority of the Red-Black crowd at Raulino de Oliveira, in Volta Redonda, Flamengo and Palmeiras even created good chances, but stopped at the goalkeepers. Dyogo, for Fla, and Kaique, for Verdão, had a great match.
In the first half, the highlight was the alviverde wall, which ensured that the score was not changed. He stopped Lorran, a Flamengo star, and Petterson twice in just the first 45 minutes.
The second stage was all Palmeiras. After defending for the first 45 minutes, the team went on the attack and almost opened the scoring. The best chance went to Ian, who would return to being a character in the game during penalties. The end of the game was marked by fatigue, but even so, Lorran, again, almost gave Flamengo the title.
Palmeiras has charge invalidated for stopover
One of Palmeiras’ penalties was not missed, but invalidated. Full-back Ian ran towards the kick and, before hitting the ball, changed his stride and took a short break, which didn’t seem purposeful. Still, by rule, the penalty did not count.
Ian received a yellow card for trying to deceive Dyogo, who pointed to the lime mark while the player from Palmeiras rolled the ball into the goal.
Decision creates confusion between Flamengo and Palmeiras
After the referee’s correct decision, a beginning of confusion formed on Raulino de Oliveira’s lawn. Players from both teams started a shoving match.
The confusion was cleared by the assistant referees. Members of the Palmeiras technical commission were expelled by the judge before the last four charges.
