Cruzeiro finally announced its coach for the sequence of the season. After Pepa’s dismissal and some frustrations in the coaching market, Raposa set Zé Ricardo as the new commander. On the night of this Tuesday (5), the club from Minas Gerais announced the hit on social networks.

Cruzeiro and Zé Ricardo agreed on a contract lasting until the end of 2024. Together with the coach, assistant coach Cléber dos Santos and physical trainer Fábio Eiras also arrive at the club. The new captain’s first contact with the squad is expected to take place on Wednesday (6th), during activities at Toca da Raposa.

Even before announcing Zé Ricardo, Cruzeiro announced that there will be a face-to-face press conference at Toca da Raposa, this Wednesday morning (6). Cast training is scheduled for the same time, at 10 am (Brasília time).

It is worth noting that Cruzeiro initially proposed a contract until the end of this year, which was accepted by Zé Ricardo. However, the coach’s staff came into play and ‘asked’ for the bond to be longer, with no cost to the club for termination from January 2024. The information was first disclosed by ‘Goal’.

‘Yes’ by Zé Ricardo comes after a series of negatives to Cruzeiro

Before closing with Zé Ricardo, Cruzeiro accumulated losses in the coach market. Paulo Autuori, current technical director of the club, was consulted, but the professional chose to remain in the position he occupies.

Subsequently, the Celeste club went after Gabriel Milito, who recently left Argentinos Juniors. Tired, the Argentine was open to the project as long as it started in 2024, with a pre-season and participation in assembling the squad. In a hurry, the Fox rejected the idea.

Finally, Odair Hellmann was the third name tried. The 46-year-old coach, without a club since he was fired from Santos, was excited about the possibility of leading Cruzeiro. However, the desire of the board to count on the professional only until December of this year cooled down the negotiations once and for all.

Career of Ze Ricardo

Zé Ricardo started his coaching career in 2016, commanding Flamengo, where he was champion of the 2017 Rio Cup. Afterwards, he went through Vasco and Botafogo. At both clubs he fluctuated between good and bad moments, however, he was not missed by either crowd.

In the 2019 season, Zé Ricardo commanded Fortaleza and Internacional and repeated the script with a lot of oscillation and little regularity. In the same year he also had experience in the Middle East with Qatar SC.
