Much was said about Sporting’s Champions League campaign and how well they played against the 3 other sides in their group. Home and away against Maribor, Chelsea and Schalke they performed very well and gave a fantastic account of themselves in each game. Their games were very entertaining, too, as you weren’t far away from a bundle of goals and even some controversy. They really were a breath of fresh air in the group stages of the Champions League and they showed that they can perform on the big stage. Continue reading

New England’s Jose Goncalves has been around. Currently playing in America, the Portuguese defender has also played in Switzerland, Italy, Lithuania, Scotland, and Germany. Now with the New England Revolution in America’s Major League Soccer, Goncalves has found his niche in the team. On Wednesday evening, Sporting travel to Stamford Bridge to take on the already-qualified Chelsea in a crunch match that will decide whether they go through to the Round of 16 of the Champions League or not. They go into the game needing just one point to qualify as the group runners-up, having beaten Schalke (4-2) and Maribor (3-1) at home in their last two Champions League games. Continue reading

It was an interesting week in Portuguese Football with the Big 3 winning and Guimaraes keeping their top of the table form going. Porto and Sporting both won handily in their matches, Porto putting 5 goals past Rio Ave in the second half at the Dragao to win 5-0. Marco Silva’s Sporting came on with 2 strikers in their starting line-up and it paid dividends as they scored all the goals running out to a 3-0 victory at home to Setubal. Benfica travelled to Academica and two first half goals from Gaitan & Luisao made it an easy trip keeping them 3 points ahead of Porto in the Premeira League Table.
