Due to injuries, Silvio and Danny have withdrawn from the Portuguese training camp ahead of the team’s crunch play-off games against Bosnia. Silvio had been slightly injured while on duty for Atletico Madrid, and appears to not have recovered in time. Danny also has had similar problems, so he was also withdrawn. Called up as replacements for the attacking midfielder and the wing back are Vieirinha and Eliseu. This is Vieirinha’s first call for the Portuguese National team, and it is one that is thouroughly deserved. The winger/attacking midfielder has been a revelation in Greece over the past few seasons after leaving Porto. Many have called for his inclusion in the squad, so his inclusion is a welcome one. Eliseu’s inclusion is a welcome one too. The left winger-cum-left back has excelled in his new position, most notable during the team’s 5-3 win over Iceland, where he recorded one goal and two assists. Though neither of these players will most likely see playing time, they are assets for the team coming from the bench.
Nelson Oliveira and Lassana Camara have both been dropped from the Portuguese Under-21 team, due to injury. Both Oliveira and Sana, as he is called, impressed for Portugal during this summer’s U-20 World Cup. They have more than earned their call-ups, but their U-21 debuts will have to wait. Pele, of Genoa, and Joao Silva, currently on loan at Vitoria Setubal from Everton, have been called up as able replacements. Joao Silva has been in fine form this season, already scoring twice this season. Pele has yet to play for Genoa, but like Sana and Nelson Oliveira, he was impressive in the U-20 World Cup.
Due to an injury picked up during training, Paulo Bento has announced that Fabio Coentrao will not feature for the Seleccao during Wednesday’s friendly match against Spain. This comes as a blow for the team, as Coentrao was a live-wire at left-back. He is a hard player to replace. Genoa midfielder Miguel Veloso, who can also play at left-back, was called in to replace the Benfica man. Elsewhere, Paulo Machado was also added to the squad. Bento gave no reasons for his belated inclusion, but it is thought that he was brought in to strengthen a depleted midfield. Also, Silvestre Varela was dropped from the team due to injury. A replacement player has not been announced. Portugal face Spain in Portugal on Wednesday the 17th of November.
Nacional striker Orlando Sa has been forced to withdraw from the Portuguese Under-21 Team due to injury. Sa underwent a medical evaluation upon meeting with his fellow Under-21 players and was deemed unfit. He will be out of action for both of Portugal’s remaining two qualification matches. Meanwhile Bebe, Joao Silva, and Fabio Faria all spoke of the importance of the two games. Bebe stressed the importance of winning all three points, saying: “We need to win, but England also need to win and we’ll play in front of our audience.” Fabio Faria spoke of the squad’s determination, saying: “We will work hard for that on Friday we can win”
