Espanyol to Benfica
In a surprising move, Benfica has signed Rui Fonte from La Liga side Espanyol on a four and a half year deal. Fonte moved to Spain in 2010 on loan from Sporting Lisbon, and impressed at Espanyol’s B team. His performances were enough for the Spanish club to purchase him outright. He appeared 17 times for Espanyol last season, scoring once, but has since fallen down the pecking order. Earlier this season, it became clear that Fonte would not be an Espanyol player much longer, and he was put out on the market. This move comes as a surprise, as there was no talk of it beforehand. It just came out of the blue. Regardless, Fonte will be an eagle for the next four and a half seasons.
Simao – Unattached to Espanyol
Experienced winger Simao has signed for La Liga side Espanyol for two seasons after his release from Besiktas at the end of last season. Simao has had much experience playing in Spain, after two highly successful spells in the country, one with Barcelona, the other with Atletico Madrid. Simao, who had been a stalwart for the Portuguese National Team, will surely lift the quality of Espanyol’s play.
Rui Fonte has finally made his first-team debut for Espanyol. Fonte is on loan from Sporting Lisbon, and has been playing on the Espanyol’s B team for the majority of the season to date. His performances have been impressive, with his current goal tally at 11 for the team. His impressive performances have earned him the opportunity to train with the first team, and today against Sporting Gjion, he was handed his debut. Fonte is regarded as a hot prospect for the future, and hopefully this loan will help him gain experience.
