Transfer News – 5/19/10

It has been a busy few days in terms of Portuguese player transfers. So, lets get started, shall we….

1. Ricardo Costa – Lille to Valencia

The Portuguese international, who was recently included in Portugal’s World Cup squad, has enjoyed a decent half-season for French powerhouse Lille, where he moved to from Wolfsburg in January. He will join Valencia on July 1, although if Portugal make it far enough in the World Cup, he may be joining them later. Costa will be the third Portuguese player on Valencia’s books, the others being Manuel Fernandes and Miguel.

2. Maniche – Koln to ?

Portuguese midfielder Maniche recently rescinded his contract with German outfit Koln, who he joined lat summer after having been released by Atletico Madrid. Since joining, he has enjoyed varying degrees of success, but overall has had a season to forget. His reason for leaving? Besides the German media pouncing on every mistake he commits, his kids don’t enjoy their school. So, Maniche looks to move back to Portugal, namely Sporting, to rediscover what happiness feels like, and if you look at how he played for Porto, this move may be VERY good for him.

3. Fabio Faria meets up with Benfica

Portuguese U-21 international Fabio Faria has met up with the club that he will be representing next season, Benfica, for a tournament in Canada and the United States.

4. Deco – Chelsea to Sporting?

Portuguese international Deco has recently stated that he looks to move back to his country of birth (Brazil) in order to finish his career where it started. Fluminese were said to be interested, but have opted out due to his high salary, so Sporting are now said to be interested in the midfielder. Although this move looks improbable, if Sporting actually do sign him along with Maniche and Ze Castro, both of whom they are linked with, then we may see a skilled team next season.

Portuguese Transfer News – 1/30/10

As the transfer window slowly comes to a close, there is still much news to report involving Portuguese transfers. Here is the important stuff I could find:

Pedro Mendes moves to Sporting

After what feels like years of negotiations, Pedro Mendes has put pen-to-paper on a 2 and a half year deal. The Portuguese international has recently been out of action for Rangers due to an injury picked up in the Champions League. Pedro Mendes was one of Rangers highest paid players, so this move is an important one for Sporting.

Inter Drop Fernandes Interest

Manuel Fernandes, who has recently been recovering from a leg injury, was thought to have moved to Inter Milan on a loan deal. Evidently, all of the specifics of the move were ironed out, and all that was left was the routine medical. It appears as if Fernandes’s leg hasn’t quite healed enough, so the deal fell through. His presentation was planned out and ready to go, but it was subsequently cancelled. The Valenica midfielder is actively seeking a starting position for this summer’s World Cup, and was hoping that a move would secure that hope.

Ricardo Costa to Lille

Portuguese international defender Ricardo Costa has transfered from German champions Wolfsburg to Ligue 1 side Lille. Lille are enjoying a splendid season, currently sitting third in the French League. Costa’s playing time has slowly been dwindling, so in hopes to renew interest from Carlos Queiroz, and to gain some more playing time, he has moved to France.

Stanislas Oliveira to Blackburn?

In a few very peculiar stories, I learned that Portuguese under – 21 international Stanislas Oliveira has moved from Ligue 2 side Sedan to Premier League side Blackburn Rovers for a estimated 500,000 pound fee. I find this hard to believe, but I guess anything is possible in this wonderful sport.
