Transfer News – 11/19/10

Old transfer news that we thought were buried are starting to come to the surface. Here’s the latest:

Fernando Meira to Lazio?

Zenit defender Fernando Meira, who has recently fallen out of favor at the club, is reportedly a transfer target for Italian club Lazio. Lazio are looking to build on their positive start to the Serie A this season by reinforcing their defense.

Bayern After Bosingwa…Again

Bayern Munich are after Portuguese right back Bosingwa once again. The German club are looking for an alternative to Lahm, as there are no other players capable of playing right-back.

Hugo AlmeidaHugo Almeida to Join Fernandes

With the arrival of Jesualdo Ferreira at Panathinaikos, Hugo Almeida has stated that he interested in a possible reunion with Ferreira at the Greek club. Speculation has been high with Almeida’s contract set to expire, and the striker has stated that he is open to the move. The move would have him join fellow Portuguese Daniel Fernandes. Sporting Lisbon and Valencia are also said to be interested.

News keeps pouring in from across Portugal regarding transfer rumors for the next transfer window. Here’s the latest:

Hugo Almeida1. Valencia Negotiating with Almeida

Werder Bremen striker Hugo Almeida is apparently in negotiations with Valencia over a proposed transfer to the Mestalla this January. Almeida, whose contract expires in January, is the ideal target for the Spanish club, who is in need of strikers. Valencia officials hope to get Almeida on a free transfer.

2. Coentrao Watched by Barcelona

Let’s see…First Bayern, then Liverpool, then Chelsea, then A.C. Milan, now Barcelona. It’s no wonder that these big clubs are following the winger given his performances for Benfica and Portugal. Just think… A year and a half ago, Coentrao was a doubt to even make the Benfica first team. Now, he is a starter for the Portuguese National Team and one of Benfica’s key players. Coentrao, however, is not prepared to leave.

3. Joao Ribeiro Courted by Fulham, CSKA

Vitoria Guimaraes midfielder Joao Ribeiro, who was recently called up to the National Team, is on Fulham’s wish-list. Ribeiro has been in top form for Guimaraes, and it has apparently not gone unnoticed. The midfielder is thought to be valued at around 4.5 million euros, a price that Fulham is willing to pay. Ribeiro was bought for free from Academica this summer, so a 4.5 million dollar profit doesn’t sound too bad, does it? CSKA is also apparently chasing the 22 year-old. No more information on that bit, unfortunately.

A lot has been happening lately involving transfers, and it seems that the more that happens, the less time I have to report on it. Here’s the brunt of it.

1. Pizzi loaned to Pacos Ferreira again

Portuguese Under-21 international Pizzi has been loaned from Braga to fellow Liga Zon Sagres Pacos Ferreira. The 20 year-old was on loan to Pacos for half of last season, and after some intense negotiations, Braga have decided to loan him out again, this time for the entire 2010-2011 season.

2. Nelson Oliveira Switches Rio Ave for Pacos

Benfica starlet Nelson Oliveira has apparently swapped a loan move from Rio Ave to Pacos Ferreira. Originally, Oliveira was to play for Rio Ave for the 2010-2011 season, but it has now surfaced that the Portuguese Under-19 international will now be playing for Pacos de Ferreira instead. Why? I don’t know.

3. Sergio Oliveira Loaned to Beira-Mar

FC Porto youngster Sergio Oliveira will spend next season on loan to Liga Zon Sagres newcomers Beira-Mar. Oliveira was quite impressive in the recent UEFA U-19 championships, scoring against Italy.

4. Benfica Starlet Snapped up by Parma

Danilo Periera, who recently impressed with the Portugal Under-19 side at the UEFA Euro U-19 Championship, has recently been touted to move to Serie A, specifically Genoa and Parma. Parma somehow came out on top and Pereira is tied to them for the next 5 years. Supposedly he will be unveiled tomorrow.

5. Tiago Loaned to Atletico…again

Portuguese World Cup star Tiago has, once again, been loaned to Europa League champions Atletico Madrid from Juventus. Quique Flores, the Atleico coach, struggled to get Tiago again after an impressive spell last season.Tiago thoroughly approved the move, saying that Atletico is the only team he would consider moving to.

6. Meireles on Verge of United Move.

Raul Meireles was suprisingly left out of Porto’s squad for their upcoming Europa League match, further fueling the transfer speculation surrounding him. Sir Alex Ferguson is apparently searching for a replacement for the aging Paul Scholes. After he failed at his bid for German midfielder Ozil, Sir Alex has now shifted his attention to Raul Meireles. Meireles was one of Portugal’s bright points at this summer’s World Cup, and Chelsea were apparently on the verge of signing him this summer, but the deal fell through.

The news just keeps pouring in, so here’s the latest.

1. Helder Barbosa: Porto to Nacional – The Portuguese winger has been owned by Porto ever since he started to play football professionally, but like other players (such as Andre Castro, Ukra, and Candeias) has showcased his skills at other teams. I have no idea how much the transfer was worth, but I am going to venture a guess and say that Nacional didn’t go cheap.

2. Marsielle strongly linked with Raul Meireles – The Portuguese midfielder has been linked with Sevilla and Fiorentina in recent days, but Marsielle has started to show more interest. Meireles, however, will move for no less than 8 million pounds, according to FC Porto.

3. Aston Villa Chasing Valencia’s Miguel – Valencia right-back Miguel has enjoyed a decent season for the Los Che, which is why Aston Villa are looking to bolster their squad with him.

4. Malaga Eyeing Quim – The Portuguese international goalkeeper is currently being courted strongly by Spanish side Malaga CF. Quim has played an integral part in Benfica’s recent Portuguese Championship campaign, so it comes as no surprise that other clubs will be following him.

There are quite a few things happening in regards to Portuguese transfers. Like most transfer periods, there are more rumors than actual deals going through.

1. Ukra Close to Newcastle Switch – Porto-owned, Olhanense starlet, has been a revelation for the Portuguese Liga side this season. Newcastle were close to signing him this January. Their 2 million pound offer was rejected by Porto earlier this season, so they need to up the ante with their bid for the winger.

2. Vaz Te – Bolton to ? – Portuguese striker Ricardo Vaz Te, who hasn’t seen a first-team opportunity in over a season, has decided to rescind his contract with English side Bolton Wanderers. Vaz Te has suffered through questionable fitness throughout the last few seasons, so he is ready to find a fresh challenge.

3. Joao Moutinho Sure to Leave Sporting – Sporting captain Joao Moutinho has recently come out and said that he will surely leave Sporting for a Premier League club. Everton are known to be courting him, and with Nuno Valente the Portuguese scout, the deal will most likely happen.

4. Miguel Veloso to Inter? – Miguel Veloso is in “advanced” talks with Inter Milan, most likely due to Jose Mourinho being the coach. If Mourinho leaves, then the deal will most likely fall through.

It has been a busy few days in terms of Portuguese player transfers. So, lets get started, shall we….

1. Ricardo Costa – Lille to Valencia

The Portuguese international, who was recently included in Portugal’s World Cup squad, has enjoyed a decent half-season for French powerhouse Lille, where he moved to from Wolfsburg in January. He will join Valencia on July 1, although if Portugal make it far enough in the World Cup, he may be joining them later. Costa will be the third Portuguese player on Valencia’s books, the others being Manuel Fernandes and Miguel.

2. Maniche – Koln to ?

Portuguese midfielder Maniche recently rescinded his contract with German outfit Koln, who he joined lat summer after having been released by Atletico Madrid. Since joining, he has enjoyed varying degrees of success, but overall has had a season to forget. His reason for leaving? Besides the German media pouncing on every mistake he commits, his kids don’t enjoy their school. So, Maniche looks to move back to Portugal, namely Sporting, to rediscover what happiness feels like, and if you look at how he played for Porto, this move may be VERY good for him.

3. Fabio Faria meets up with Benfica

Portuguese U-21 international Fabio Faria has met up with the club that he will be representing next season, Benfica, for a tournament in Canada and the United States.

4. Deco – Chelsea to Sporting?

Portuguese international Deco has recently stated that he looks to move back to his country of birth (Brazil) in order to finish his career where it started. Fluminese were said to be interested, but have opted out due to his high salary, so Sporting are now said to be interested in the midfielder. Although this move looks improbable, if Sporting actually do sign him along with Maniche and Ze Castro, both of whom they are linked with, then we may see a skilled team next season.
