Nacional striker Orlando Sa has been forced to withdraw from the Portuguese Under-21 Team due to injury. Sa underwent a medical evaluation upon meeting with his fellow Under-21 players and was deemed unfit. He will be out of action for both of Portugal’s remaining two qualification matches. Meanwhile Bebe, Joao Silva, and Fabio Faria all spoke of the importance of the two games. Bebe stressed the importance of winning all three points, saying: “We need to win, but England also need to win and we’ll play in front of our audience.” Fabio Faria spoke of the squad’s determination, saying: “We will work hard for that on Friday we can win”
Even though the World Cup is at our doorstep, the world of soccer is still buzzing with activity. Here’s the latest:
The Portuguese defender moved from Vitoria Guimaraes to Valladolid in the Winter after it was widely speculated that he had transferred to Porto. Sereno did relatively well at the Spanish outfit but, just like fellow countryman Pele, relegation was inevitable. So, frightened at the prospect of playing in the Liga Adelante, or something like that, Porto have snatched up the defender on a free transfer with a buyout clause of 30 million.
2. Bruno Gama to EPL?
Highly rated Rio Ave winger Bruno Gama is evidently on two English Premiership teams’ radars. The two teams were not specified. Gama is a former captain of the Portugal U-21 side, and has recently impressed for Rio Ave.
Portuguese U-21 international Orlando Sa will join Helder Barbosa at Nacional next season as they aim to earn a European spot for the 2011-2012 season. Orlando Sa has had limited playing time since arriving from SC Braga last summer, so the loan to Nacional was obviously done to increase playing time. Helder Barbosa, who also recently joined Nacional from Porto may combine quite well with Sa, and fellow U-21 international Joao Aurelio. Expect to see goals.
Two goals from Porto striker Orlando Sa, and one from Candeias were enough to give the home side a 3-1 victory over a skilled Dutch team. Portugal are trying to salvage their quest to qualify for the 2011 Uefa U21 Euro. In their group are the likes of England and Greece, so they are trying to emulate the difficulty of those games by playing the Netherlands. Anyway, Portugal got off to an amazing start, scoring two goals in the first ten minutes, both of which came from Orlando Sa, who looked too good for his opponents. Candeias then scored over twenty minutes later, inflicting more pain on Holland, making the score an unheard-of 3-0. The dutch fought back, however, with Siem de Jong at the end of most, if not all, of their chances. Soon, he got his goal, but it was little more than a consolation goal, making the final score 3-1. Joao Silva, who was recently transferred from Desporto das Aves to Everton, made his debut for the U-21 team, coming on for Orlando Sa, who will miss the next game due to injury.
Ventura, Pereirinha, Andre Pinto (Bura), Daniel Carrico, Andre Pinto, Ruben Lima, Andre Santos (Pedro Moreira), Castro (Pizzi), Rui Pedro (Andre Almeida), Candeias, Joao Aurelio (Wilson), Orlando Sa (Joao Silva)
Full Match Highlights
Finally, after a long injury spell, Orlando sa has made his long-awaited debut for Porto. sa was in the starting lineup in Porto’s 2-0 win over lower-level Oliveirense. It was not his greatest performance, but coming back from a lengthy absence and playing immediately in the starting eleven isn’t easy. His inclusion in the starting eleven just after absence shows that Ferreira may have faith in this kid. I hope he does have faith in him, because with a little bit of work, and a lot of patience, we could have ourselves the next Pauleta, which Portugal desperately needs.
