Joao Silva Scores on Debut

Everton’s 21 year-old striker, Joao Silva, scored yesterday on his debut for Vitoria Setubal. Silva, who never made a single first team appearance last season for Everton, is now on loan at Vitoria Setubal. The tall striker caught the attention of Premeir League side Everton after his goal scoring exploits in the Portuguese second division for Aves in the 2009-2010 season. Everton purchased the striker for right around 1 million pounds, only for him to play for the reserves. Meanwhile, Silva was showing his abilities well for the Portuguese Under-21 team. Everton, realizing that Silva needed playing time to continue growing as a player, sent him out on loan to UD Leiria. At Leiria, Silva showed glimpses of his undeniable ability, most notably in Leiria’s 3-3 draw with champions, Benfica. Joao Silva is now loaned to Vitoria Setubal to further his development, and it looked like it’s working. Silva headed home Claudio Pitbull’s cross in the dying minutes of the Vitoria Setubal-Pacos Ferreira match to give Setubal a 2-1 victory on opening day.

Paulo Machado’s Season Off to a Flyer

Playing at Saint EtienneThe French league officially began today, and Toulouse and Portuguese National Team midfielder, Paulo Machado, started on a high note. Machado currently plays for French side Toulouse, and was impressive in their win against Ajaccio. Machado had some good runs, but the best was saved for last. The Portuguese midfielder picked up the ball on the edge of the box and unleashed a ferocious shot into the upper right hand corner of the net. That goal sealed the win for Toulouse as they aim for a Europa League spot this season.

Boa Morte Nearing West Ham Return, da Costa Settling in

Portuguese international Boa Morte is nearing the final stages of his injury recovery. The winger suffered cruciate ligament damage in the pre-season, and is hoping to be fit for the remainder of West Ham’s season, as they battle out of the relegation zone.

West Ham teammate and fellow Portuguese Manuel da Costa scored today in The Hammer’s 2 all draw with Everton. Since joining in August, the defender has settled in nicely, and I wouldn’t be surprised if an international call-up is relatively imminent.
