Ivan Cavaleiro

Benfica to Deportivo (loan)

After days of intense speculation, it was announced yesterday that Benfica’s Ivan Cavaleiro had agreed to move on loan to La Liga side Deportivo for the season. Cavaleiro had been closely followed by Pacos Ferreira, Maritimo, and Academica after Benfica coach Jorge Jesus made it clear that the winger would not feature in his plans this season. Cavaleiro will now join the newly-promoted Spanish side until the end of the season, and will hope to build on a positive 2013/2014 season, which saw him debut both for Benfica’s first team and the Portuguese National Team. He will join fellow countrymen Diogo Salomao, Henrique Sereno, and Luisinho.

Bento Calls on Neto

Paulo Bento released a 23 man squad today for the Portugal National team’s upcoming World Cup qualifying fixtures against Russia and Northern Ireland. The biggest surprise on the list was the inclusion of Siena central-defender Neto in the squad. The defender has been impressive in Italy so far this term, and has earned his first call accordingly. Sereno Loaned to Valladolid

Sereno – Porto to Valladolid (loan)

Porto central defender Sereno has been loaned to La Liga side Real Valladolid for the entire 2012-2013 season. Sereno did not fit into Vitor Pereira’s plans at Porto, and after a loan last season to Koln, another move this year was likely. This is Sereno’s second spell at the Spanish club, after he played for them a few seasons ago, before he was bought by Porto. Sereno, who has been on the fringes of the Seleccao, will hope to add to his reputation with this move.

Bento Announces Squad

Portugal National team coach Paulo Bento released a list of 23 for the team’s upcoming Euro 2012 Qualifying matches. With Fabio Coentrao, Pepe, and Hugo Almeida all out injured, many wondered who the coach would call up in place. Sereno, Ricardo Costa, and Ricardo Quaresma all earned the call. Some surprise exclusions are Quim, who has been in good form for a winning Braga team, and Bosingwa, who has earned a starting spot at Chelsea with his eye-catching displays. Here’s the full list:

Defenders: Bruno Alves, Eliseu, Sereno, João Pereira, Ricardo Costa, Rolando, Sílvio

Porto Pair to Leave?

With the arrivals of Magala and Defour from Standard Leige, central midfielders and central defenders are looking nervously at their possible playing time. Sereno and Ruben Micael are two of those players. Both found playing time hard to come by last season, and it looks less likely this season.

Sereno to Koln?

Sereno was purchased by Porto in June of last year after a half-season stint with Real Valladolid. The central defender has had steep competition for playing time, in the form of Maicon, Otamendi, and Rolando, two of which are full internationals. Sereno only managed five starts in the league, with the Rolando-Maicon pairing often preferred. Koln’s sporting director is reportedly in Porto currently so that a deal can be struck between the two teams. Maybe Sereno can revitalize his career in Germany.

Ruben Micael Expected to Leave

Following the arrival of Defour to Porto, Andre Castro went out on loan to Sporting Gijon. Now, Ruben Micael is exploring similar options. Defour, who is a seasoned Belgian international, is likely to get the nod over Micael, who was used sparingly last season. According to reports coming out of Portugal, Spain is the most likely destination for the midfielder.

Transfer News – 6/8/10

Even though the World Cup is at our doorstep, the world of soccer is still buzzing with activity. Here’s the latest:

1. Sereno to Porto

The Portuguese defender moved from Vitoria Guimaraes to Valladolid in the Winter after it was widely speculated that he had transferred to Porto. Sereno did relatively well at the Spanish outfit but, just like fellow countryman Pele, relegation was inevitable. So, frightened at the prospect of playing in the Liga Adelante, or something like that, Porto have snatched up the defender on a free transfer with a buyout clause of 30 million.

2. Bruno Gama to EPL?

Highly rated Rio Ave winger Bruno Gama is evidently on two English Premiership teams’ radars. The two teams were not specified. Gama is a former captain of the Portugal U-21 side, and has recently impressed for Rio Ave.

3. Orlando Sa loaned to Nacional

Portuguese U-21 international Orlando Sa will join Helder Barbosa at Nacional next season as they aim to earn a European spot for the 2011-2012 season. Orlando Sa has had limited playing time since arriving from SC Braga last summer, so the loan to Nacional was obviously done to increase playing time. Helder Barbosa, who also recently joined Nacional from Porto may combine quite well with Sa, and fellow U-21 international Joao Aurelio. Expect to see goals.

Sereno Debuts for Valladolid

Portuguese center-back Sereno finally made his debut for Valladolid yesterday in their league match against Deportivo. Sereno hadn’t even made an appearance for the Spanish outfit(since he moved from Vitoria in January), so it came as a surprise when he was named in Valladolid’s starting eleven. Not only did he start, but he played a full match, along with fellow compatriot Pele. Valladolid now sit just in the relegation zone, and it looks as if they are to be one of the three teams relegated into the Segunda Division.

Sereno Moves to Valladolid

Vitoria Guimaraes’s Henrique Sereno has moved to relegation-battlers Real Valladolid. Sereno won’t be the only Portuguese player at Valladolid, as young midfielder Pele also plays for the Spanish outfit. It was thought that Valladolid had previously failed in signing the promising defender, and that Porto had signed him. It now looks as if that was not the case, as the defender moved for a mere 150,000 euros.
