Bento Names Squad for Euro Qualifier

Paulo Bento named a squad of 23 for Portugal’s upcoming Euro 2012 qualifier against Cyprus. The game is scheduled to be played on September 2nd, and many are hoping for a better result than that of last year’s game, which ended at 4-4. Bento’s squad include’s 4 players not called up to the last squad: Miguel Veloso, Eliseu, Paulo Machado, and Rolando.

Here’s the list:

Bento Names Squad of 21

Portugal coach Paulo Bento has named a squad of 21 for the team’s upcoming friendly with Luxembourg next week. The game is the Seleccao’s last warm-up game before their continuing Euro 2012 qualification  campaign. The most notable inclusions in Bento’s squad are Andre Castro, Nuno Gomes, and Quim. Nuno Gomes and Quim were previously Benfica stalwarts, but are both now at Braga. Both seem to be on the out for the Seleccao, but Bento evidently still has a plan for them. Andre Castro had an impressive season on loan from Porto at Sporting Gijon. The midfielder impressed a lot at Gijon, quickly establishing himself as a starter.

Goalkeepers: Eduardo (Benfica), Rui Patricio (Sporting), Quim (Braga)
Defenders: Bruno Alves (Zenit), Fabio Coentrao (Real Madrid), Joao Pereira (Sporting), Pepe (Real Madrid), Ricardo Carvalho (Real Madrid), Silvio (Atletico Madrid)
Midfielders: Castro (FC Porto), Andre Santos (Sporting), Joao Moutinho (FC Porto), Raul Meireles (Liverpool), Ruben Micael (FC Porto)
Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Danny (Zenit), Hugo Almeida (Besiktas), Postiga (Sporting), Nani (Manchester United), Nuno Gomes (Braga), Varela (FC Porto)

Paulo Bento Names Squad of 20

Portuguese National Team coach Paulo Bento has released a list of 20 players to represent the Seleccao in their upcoming match against Argentina tomorrow. This game will be the mouthwatering showdown of two of the greatest living footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. This much-anticipated game will be held in Switzerland. Some surprise inclusions into the squad were Ricardo Quaresma, who has been enjoying a superb season in Turkey for Besiktas, and Hugo Ventura, who has been Portimonense’s first-choice goalkeeper for this season. Bento’s selection of Ventura has raised some eyebrows, but Bento stated that he was only choosing players who were playing reguarly, which Ventura has. Ricardo Carvalho was originally included, but has been replaced due to an injury. Ricardo Costa has been named as his replacement. Here is the full squad:

Goalkeepers: Eduardo (Genoa), Rui Patricio (Sporting), Hugo Ventura (Portimonense)

Defenders: Bruno Alves (Zenit St Petersburg), Bosingwa (Chelsea), Joao Pereira (Sporting Lisbon), Fabio Coentrao (Benfica), Rolando (Porto), Ricardo Costa (Valencia)

Midfielders: Carlos Martins (Benfica), Joao Moutinho (Porto), Raul Meireles (Liverpool), Paulo Machado (Toulouse), Miguel Veloso (Genoa)

Rui Jorge Names Unrecognizable Squad

Brand new Portuguese Under-21 National Team coach, Rui Jorge, has named his first squad as head coach. With many of the former U-21 members aged out, a brand-new crop of players are set to take their place. With just five of the twenty three players ever having played for the U-21 team, this squad is completely new. Though I do not know many of the names on the list, players such as David Simao, Fredy, Abel, Andre Almeida, and Wilson stand out as players that fully deserve this call-up due to their good form. Here’s the complete list:

Belenenses: Abel, André Almeida, and Fredy
CD Pinhalnovense: André Martins
CD Fátima: João Pereira
Deportivo da Coruña: Dinis
Everton FC: João Silva
FC Paços de Ferreira: David Simão

Sporting Lisbon was the most represented club on the list, with no less than 6 players called-up from the club. Here’s the full list:

Veloso, Machado Added; Coentrao, Varela Dropped

Due to an injury picked up during training, Paulo Bento has announced that Fabio Coentrao will not feature for the Seleccao during Wednesday’s friendly match against Spain. This comes as a blow for the team, as Coentrao was a live-wire at left-back. He is a hard player to replace. Genoa midfielder Miguel Veloso, who can also play at left-back, was called in to replace the Benfica man. Elsewhere, Paulo Machado was also added to the squad. Bento gave no reasons for his belated inclusion, but it is thought that he was brought in to strengthen a depleted midfield. Also, Silvestre Varela was dropped from the team due to injury. A replacement player has not been announced. Portugal face Spain in Portugal on Wednesday the 17th of November.

Oliveira Names U-23 Squad

Agostinho Oliveira today named a squad of 18 for the Portugal U-23 Team’s upcoming game against the Northern Ireland. One notable inclusion is Ivanildo, of Portimonense, who has never featured for the U-23s. Here’s the entire list:

Académica de Coimbra: Nuno Coelho
CD Nacional: Orlando Sá
Eskiehirspor: Pelé
FC Porto: Castro and Ukra
PAOK FC: Vieirinha
Portimonense SC: Ivanildo and Ventura

Rio Ave FC:
Mário Felgueiras
SC Beira-Mar:
André Marques
: André Santos, Daniel Carriço, Nuno André Coelho, Saleiro and Yannick
Vitória SC de Guimarães: João Ribeiro
West Ham United FC: Manuel da Costa

Fernandes and Micael Drafted in to Squad

Manuel Fernandes and Ruben Micael have been added into the Portugal squad ahead of their upcoming Euro 2012 qualification matches. Liedson and Miguel Veloso have withdrawn due to injury, so Paulo Bento has called up Micael and Fernandes in place of the two. Manuel Fernandes is enjoying a better season than last, having played in five games and started six. Ruben Micael really emerged last season as one of the finest midfielders playing in Portugal, thanks to his heroics for Nacional. Porto eagerly snapped him up during the January transfer window, and, after hurdling an injury, he has bounced back impressively, especially this season. Portugal are looking to improve on close to their worst possible start in Euro 2012 qualification.

Bento Releases Squad List of 23

Paulo Bento has released a list of 23 for Portugal’s upcoming games against Iceland and Denmark. This is Bento’s first set of call-ups since taking over the role of Portugal National Team Head Coach. One more notable inclusion is Helder Postiga, who has been revitalized under new Sporting Lisbon coach Paulo Sergio (as evidence with the goal he scored yesterday). Here’s the full list:

Goalkeepers: Beto, Rui Patricio, Eduardo

Defenders: Bruno Alves, Fabio Coentrao, Joao Pereira, Ricardo Carvalho, Silvio, Rolando;
