At the start of the season for the two I Liga teams, Algarve came out on top, with goals from Rildo (6 minutes, penalty), Rony Carrillo (62) and Carlinhos (82, penalty) setting up a meeting with Lexos in the next round of the competition, while Ronaldo Tavares scored the only goal (58).
Portimonense have four reinforcements (Vinicius Silvestre, Sylvester Jasper, Rildo and Ronnie Carrillo) in addition to Guga, who played for the under-23s last season, while Estrella has 11 players initially lined up for the 2022/23 squad.
With two coaches on the bench, both serving punishments, Algarve, who made their debut on the new pitch, started practically in an advantage, opening the scoring after just six minutes, winger Rildo converting a penalty and punishing Miguel Lopes’ hand.
At the start of the season, the game changed in the first half and there was an atmosphere of danger around the two goals, especially in Algarve with Lucas Ventura (27) and Jasper (38), and in the efforts of Joao Reis (27), Regis (30) and Jean Felipe (45+1), among the amateurs, all with shots that ‘didn’t go away’.
In the second half, which started slowly, Estrella still equalized, through Ronaldo Tavares (58), with some joy, after a Regis cross, and the striker was close to 2-1 two minutes later, testing Vinicius Silvestre.
But the response from Paulo Sergio’s team was stronger, with Ecuadorian striker Rony Carrillo scoring on the rebound after Silvester Jasper’s shot hit the post (62), before Carlinhos closed the scoring from the penalty spot (82), after Luan Farias fouled reinforcements Igor.
In the second leg of the League Cup, Portimonense will face Leixões, Matosinhos in a meeting scheduled for Sunday at 11:00.
